Whatever

(Sony Music)

In a nutshell: It’s Nash Overstreet’s band! Who is that? That’s Chord Overstreet’s brother! Who is that? Trouty Mouth from Glee. Got it? Good.

High notes: They make little pretences about being serious artistes. Instead, they specialise in slick pop music that takes a little bit of everything and run it through a million-dollar recording budget. They ride the coattails of old lunkheads like Smash Mouth, the leather-donning swagger of Maroon 5 and a dash of emo rock.

Low notes: Catchy as some of the songs may be, they do have a tendency to sound irritating after a while. May have something to do with the helium voices trying to work a harmony or maybe’s it’s the ridiculously adolescent lyrical themes that are designed for 14-year-olds.

Verdict: The band has the musical longevity equivalent to a feather in an inferno. But hey, isn’t pop music somewhat like that? Songs like ‘Tonight Tonight’, ‘Downtown Girl’ and ‘Radio’ appear designed to catch your attention for ten seconds and fade into nothing the next. But hey, the masses love that stuff and Hot Chelle Rae has no problem serving plate after plate of their disposable dance pop. If you think Foster the People sound superfluous, this one’s lighter than cotton candy.
