Ah Beng the Movie: 3 Wishes

Director: Silver

Starring: Jack Lim, Gan Jiang Han, Chen Keat Yoke, Gan Mei Yan

What it’s about: It’s the eve of the Lunar New Year and every household in the village is busy preparing to receive the auspicious God of Fortune. And despite being poor, Ah Beng’s father dishes out only coins to the God of Fortune and wishes him luck and good health. In return for his kindness, the God of Fortune grants him 3 wishes, along with a doll.

Why it’s hot: The director manages to pull off every element of each character without focusing only on the main character, Ah Beng.  Props to the scene with the drifting cars! Pulling that off in the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur is quite a feat.

Why it’s not: Some of the film’s jokes are a little predictable, and some even border on awkward.

Verdict: When was the last time you spent quality time with your family? If it’s been some time, this is the perfect film to remedy that.
