Florence and the Machine
Ceremonials
(Universal)
In a nutshell: The raven-haired British banshee is back with her sophomore album and she seriously kills it.
High notes: Lots of them, literally. Florence Welch is not a subtle woman as she shrieks and sings her way through these tracks like a woman scorned and possessed. And her band keeps up with her (for the most part), with swelling guitars, driving pianos, harps and cascading strings – ensuring that while each song may begin with a whisper, it often ends as an aria. Songs like ‘Shake It Out’, at times sound like they have enough power to level a city.
Low notes: Not much at all, unless you prefer your music intimate. This one’s only fit to be played in front of thousands.
Verdict: Lungs may have established her as a vocal powerhouse within indie circles, but Ceremonials is guaranteed to supersize her career into rock stardom. With an appearance on VH1 Divas in the bag, this Camberwell-born lass is going places, fast. And with the eyes of the world fixated onBritain after Adele’s world-conquering feat this year, it’s the perfect time for Florence and her band to kick things up a notch.
