Nothing ’50/50′ about it!

50/50

Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick

Director: Will Reiser

What’s it about: Adam Lerner (Joseph) is just your regular 27-year-old who seems to have it all – a job he loves and a relationship with a beautiful artistic girl. But his life changes in a heartbeat when he discovers that he’s suffering from a rare and possibly fatal form of cancer.

Why it’s hot: Joseph’s performance is so real and honest that we truly believe, in an alternate universe, he would win an Oscar for this role. There is also something so memorable about Seth Rogen’s portrayal of the crude and profane friend, a role he often takes on and dismissed by Judd Appatow haters. The bro-mance between Joseph and Seth is strong and admirable in this one. But the leading light of the film is the brilliant combination of comedy and drama the director and screenwriters have created, which is nearly impossible, with such a taboo subject like cancer.

Why it’s not: This dark comedy has many pop culture references so it’s not going to be very funny if you’re the only one in the audience (not laughing) wondering, ‘Who is Patrick Swayze?’

Verdict: 50/50 is harsh, realistic and filled with humour in all the right places. Are we going too far to declare this one of the must-watch movies of the year? We don’t think so.
