Nirvana
Nevermind (Digitally Remastered)
(Universal)
In a nutshell: The album that turned a whole generation onto flannel, scruffy hair, and naming songs after single adjectives gets the digital treatment for new resale value.
High notes: Well, we already know how good the original album was. It’s aged fairly well and ‘Lithium’ still sounds as morosely beautiful as it did before. Kind of like a hot evil witch.
Low notes: A digitally remastered Nirvana record should be treated like full-sized cheesecake in a cupcake convention – an oversized outcast. Nirvana’s charm has always been the unrehearsed, bruised quality of their playing and recording.
Verdict: We can’t quite believe that it’s been 20 years since ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and we do miss that primal spontaneity that more or less went out with Kurt Cobain. However, we do suggest you double back to the original recordings. Bad enough that Nevermind was lambasted for being far too polished to begin with, digitally remastering it is like pouring acid on soil after a nuclear attack. Because we know all their songs so well, here’s a cover of ‘Come as You Are’ by one of our favourites, Yuna!

Great! thanks for the share!
